What does NATM stand for?

National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) is the industry trade association for manufactureres for light and medium duty trailers. The mission of NATM is to unify the light and medium duty trailer manufacturing industry by improving trailer safety and performance; proactively addressing regulatory issues; enhancing the image of the industry; providing education tools and events; and offer membership benifits and service. Trailer Trip Preparation Checklist

  • Check your maintenance schedule and be sure you are up to date.
  • Check hitch. Is is showing wear? Is it properly lubricated?
  • Fasten safety chains and breakaway switch actuating chain securely. Make certain the breakaway battery is fully charged.
  • Inspect towing hookup for secure attachment.
  • Load your trailer so that approximately 10% of the trailers total weight is on the hitch. For lighter trailers this should be increased to approximately 15%.
  • DO NOT OVERLOAD. Stay within your gross vehicle rated capacity.
  • Inflate tires according to manufacturer's specifications; inspect tires for cuts, excessive wear, etc.
  • Check wheel mouting nuts/bolts with a torque wrench.
  • Make certain the brakes are synchronized and functioning properly.
  • Check tightness of hanger bolts, shackle bolts, and u-bolts nuts.
  • Check operation of all lights.
  • Check that trailer is towing in a level position and ajust hitch height if required.
